Kayak Journey Update: 7/17/17

July 10 we woke up to a very soggy mess, last nights rain was incredible. Very heavy morning fog which gave us a later than intended start. Made a 2 1/2 mile crossing in the fog, Joe was fine with it but I really didn’t like it. Stopped for lunch and as always this time of day the waves kicked up, we waited it out and got back on the water. We made our way to a sandy beach about 9 miles from Manistique, MI. Got to take a very cool but refreshing swim and walked the beach exploring in both directions. Deer tracks everywhere but we didn’t see them. It was a 17 1/2 mile day.

July 11 we had our breakfast and coffee looking at a beautiful sunrise. Everything was dew covered and on a sandy beach that’s means it was also coated with sand, the tent must have been 5 pounds heavier than normal. Had fog again but it wasn’t a problem. We stayed close to shore. Had a nice visit with some vacationers at lunch time and then off into the fog again. We needed to find a campsite with road access because we are getting company tomorrow. Finally landed at Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, pronounced Sish-Wa which means last chance. It’s a no camping area but we were allowed to stay if we kept our tent out of sight. This is a working Lighthouse maintained by the historical society. It is restored and absolutely gorgeous. I recommend stopping at this beauty. We added 29 miles.

July 12 we were off the water because Lady Michigan was very angry, wind and waves. We didn’t mind at all because our visitor was on her way. Debbie Gelderblom, from the farm we stayed in Charlevoix earlier in the spring came and other than a great visit she also had goodies. Cookies, oranges, bananas…the list goes on. She was able to stay with us over night.

July 13 was another day on shore. We had breakfast with Debbie, no oatmeal today, scrambled eggs and biscotti with our coffee. She stayed till about 11, it was so nice seeing her.

July 14 we were able to get back out, the water was calm but the fog rolled in. Went past an inland Harbor with a freighter loading up, we sure are small next to them. We passed lots of sand beaches and some very nice but empty campgrounds, what a shame. We landed at a pretty little Harbor and city park in Garfield Township in the city of Naubinway, MI. Small and clean, very pretty. Walked into town for a dinner of pasties with gravy…yummy!

28 miles today.
